Head On Festival – Sydney Life – An exhibition by Ireneusz Luty, 27 May – 12 June 2011

“Sydney Life “
Sydney Life is a unique and engaging photographic exploration which presents the viewer with Sydney from new and unexpected angles. Pictures explore the interaction of people and places amongst the constant movement of a busy metropolis. They attempt to reveal the essence of Sydney, something that goes beyond initial ‘post-card’ impressions and facades. They show places and moments, some of which may be familiar yet surprising. These works represent an ongoing and personal journey of memory, time and experience, which as a body of work aim to provoke thought, consideration and reflection on behalf of the viewer towards this unique city.

Black Saturday - Caroline Pankert

Black Saturday

On Saturday 7th February 2009, southeast Australia was ravaged by the worst bushfires the country had ever seen. A series of raging infernos claimed 173 lives as well as hundreds of casualties, whilst wiping entire country towns off the map.

Black Saturday is a documentary portrait series, in which the Belgian photographer Caroline Pankert investigates and catalogues the effects of these bushfires in the rural Australian community of Traralgon South.

But rather than presenting the sheer magnitude of the damage, Pankert prefers to focus her lens on the detail. The photographs explore the intimate consequences of the fires as they are read through the indiscriminate traces they have left on people, property and animals alike.

The vibrant photos catch the magic of the unique and mysterious world of the protagonists Mickey and Olivia.

The film will be launched on the 23rd and 24th of July at Silverpixel and the exhibition will run until the 1st of August.

Giant in my mind – Fiona Trick

Giant in my mind is a 35 min cutting edge short film by Fiona Trick

The low budget film was assisted with a Kiama council arts grant and MetroScreens Jumpstart Grant and everyone generously volunteered their time and skills to the film.

For 6 days, 14 people pulled out all their love and creativity and made “Giant in my mind” a short film by Fiona Trick. The colourful and lively cast and crew drew attention to themselves whilst shooting on the south coast of NSW, in a small diary town Gerringong ( the directors hometown). We all left the city behind and surrendered to the mud, rain and river in the winter of 2010.

Sleeping in a beautiful farm house next to our location we forgot about the world outside the film and momentarily got lost in the magic world of Mickey and Olivia the two protagonists.

The renegade filmmakers took a few risks along the way ( in particular Jason the cameraman) and had a truly unique and memorable experience.

Synopsis

Mickey would do anything to protect Olivia but when he dies it is only Olivia who can make the choice to survive. Mickey and Olivia arrive at a derelict abandoned barn in the countryside. They have fled from their city lives after Mickey accidentally killed a man who had attempted to rape Olivia. They create a temporary home and adopt a peaceful country lifestyle, attempting not to worry about any consequences that may arise from the murder. They find happiness in caring for each other and embrace the romanticism of country life. They befriend an eccentric local farmer, jimmy who is very willing to help them out in any way. One night they are celebrating Olivia’s birthday, later when making love, an unknown man shoots Mickey in the back. Olivia in absolute shock is unable to function for several days. With Mickey dead she struggles to find the motivation to go on. Olivia finds some courage amidst her grief to keep living.
